Patricia Billman's “Ode to Fred,” a light-hearted book that tells Fred's horrible experience into a fond memory, goes from an event that could have been disastrous to a narrative full of fun and laughter.
Danny, his child, and the protagonist, Fred, are the focus of the story. Danny and his son began preparing their lunch after spending the day in the water and gathering a few fish for their food, leaving Fred at the pier. Fred cannot decide between joining them or staying by the dock as they go inside. Fred leaned over the water and peered out, but as he made another step, he fell into the water. Fred doesn't how to swim. So he tried everything he could to keep afloat. Fortunately, he manages to get a grip on the dock, and Danny arrives just in time to save the tired and worn Fred.
Although the narrative may have ended in tragedy, Patricia, Danny, and Fred found a way to make the situation humorous. The book is written in a sing-song, rhyming style, making it a fun read for kids and a learning tool for those starting to read. The book also includes beautiful and colorful illustrations that assist readers, particularly children, pay attention. The story is not, however, restricted to children. Adults who enjoy comedy and a good plot will find the book amusing and relevant in every way. After all, life does throw lemons at everyone now and then.
