Signs to Install a New Electrical Panel

A home’s electrical panel is critical. It contains a main circuit breaker that controls the power to an entire house and individual circuit breakers that each provide electricity for a specific part of a home. However, these devices can become old and outdated and will eventually need to be replaced.

When this happens, homeowners should call an electrician to replace or upgrade them to keep the household safe from electrical hazards. This post will share some signs indicating a new electrical panel should be installed.

The Home Still Has a Fuse Box

Fuse boxes function similarly to electrical panels, but they are older and stopped being installed around the 1960's. So, if homes still have a fuse box, it is old and outdated, and they should call an electrician to replace it with a new electrical panel.

When a fuse blows, it must be manually replaced since it can only be used once. On the other hand, electrical panels utilize circuit breakers that trip when overloaded and only need to be reset, allowing for a more convenient way to restore power.

It's Too Old or Corroded

Electrical panels have a typical life expectancy of around 25 to 40 years, so if they are in that range or older, they may need to be replaced.

Homeowners should also watch for visible signs of age and wear and tear on the panel, such as rust and corrosion. A rusted, corroded, or damaged electrical panel can be an electrical hazard and should be addressed by an electrician immediately. Replacing the panel will help keep the household safe.

Frequently Tripping Circuit Breakers

Another sign homeowners should watch for that can indicate an electrical panel upgrade or replacement may be necessary is frequently tripping circuit breakers. If the circuit breakers trip often, it can indicate they are overloaded and cannot handle the electricity demand and needs of the house.

Due to the growing number of appliances and electronics in homes, modern homes have different electrical demands than older homes. So, if circuit breaker tripping becomes common, an electrician should be called to determine if the panel should be upgraded or replaced.
